Our programme on 8 November features a major work for violin and painto that may well be receiving its UK premiere. Luis de Freitas Branco was an immensely skilled composer who lived in the turbulent first half of the 20th century. He wrote two sonatas for violin and piano. The first is a Romantic homage to César Franck. The second, heard in this concert, was completed in 1928 and reaffirms the composer’s commitment to tonality whilst exploring some of the modal older harmony of Portuguese folklore. It’s a wonderful work that’s only recently been revived-it gives full voice to both violin and piano as equal parters.
